Succession Readiness
Development that turns the names on your succession plan into leaders who are actually ready, before the seat opens, not after.
CONTACT USOVERVIEW
Most succession plans are a document, not a bench. The grid exists, the names are in the boxes, the board has seen the slide, and everyone in the room privately knows the truth: if the CFO resigned Friday, the “ready in two years” candidate would be ready in two years, which is not when the job would need doing. So the organization runs a quiet, unpriced risk, that no key seat opens before its heir matures, and when the risk lands, as it eventually does, the choice is a scramble hire from outside at a premium, or a promotion everyone hopes will grow into itself while the function holds its breath.
Succession readiness at Employment BOOST closes the gap between the names and the need. We work with your identified successors, high-potential leaders a level or two below the seats they are slated for, through structured, individual development engagements: an honest assessment of each person against the actual demands of the target role, a development plan aimed at the specific gaps, executive coaching to build the missing capabilities, and preparation for the moments the bigger seat contains, board exposure, enterprise decisions, public accountability. The work runs on our usual operating system, written goals, checked commitments, and complete honesty, including with you: if a name on the grid is in the wrong box, we will say so early, while there is still time to develop someone else. A succession plan that flatters is worthless. One that is true is priceless.
Have Questions About Succession Readiness?
CONTACT USSIGNS THIS IS YOUR SITUATION
- The board has started asking harder questions. “Who is ready today?” is being asked in a tone that suggests the slide is no longer a sufficient answer, and the honest response involves more hedging than anyone enjoys.
- A key departure is foreseeable. A retirement window, a health event, a leader being recruited hard. The clock on a specific seat has become audible, and the successor’s development has not accelerated to match it.
- Your last succession was a scramble. The seat opened, the heir was not ready, and the organization paid, an expensive outside hire, an interim year, or a promotion that struggled publicly. Nobody wants the sequel.
- Your high-potentials are visibly restless. Talented leaders slated for bigger things can feel when their development is theoretical, and recruiters can too. An active readiness program is also a retention program: people stay where they are being built.
- Successors are excellent at the wrong altitude. The names on the grid are superb at their current jobs, which is why they are on the grid, and largely untested at enterprise scope: cross-functional tradeoffs, capital decisions, board rooms. Excellence below is evidence, not proof.
HOW WE BUILD READINESS
Assessment against the real job. Not a generic leadership model: the actual target seat, its decisions, exposures, and pressures, defined with you, and each successor assessed honestly against it, through deep interviews, structured 360 input, and our coaches’ judgment from decades around these roles. The output is specific: ready now, ready with these developments, or miscast, and we deliver all three findings with equal directness.
Individual development, not a program cohort. Successors get one-on-one executive coaching aimed at their named gaps: enterprise perspective for the functional expert, presence for the quiet operator, decision-making at scale for the leader who has never owned the whole tradeoff. Each engagement runs on written goals and checked commitments, and each is built around the person, because readiness gaps are never generic.
Exposure, engineered. Some capabilities only grow in contact with the real thing. We work with you and each successor to design deliberate stretch: the board presentation, the enterprise project, the P&L exposure, the acting assignment, and we coach them through each one, before, during, and honestly after. Experience plus reflection is how altitude gets built.
The transition itself, prepared. When the seat opens, the first months decide the story. We prepare successors for the takeover: the predecessor’s shadow, the team that must be won rather than inherited, the early decisions that signal everything. Succession fails at the handoff more often than at the selection, so we treat the handoff as part of the curriculum.
Honest reporting to the sponsors. You and, where appropriate, your board see progress against the readiness criteria at agreed checkpoints, session confidentiality intact. The grid stops being an aspiration and becomes a dashboard: who is ready, who is closing, and what remains, in writing, defensible in the room where it matters. More than two decades of building leaders, in-house certified coaches, Birmingham, Michigan headquarters, offices nationwide, largest team in Chicago.

CLOSING PITCH
Every leadership seat in your organization will turn over. That is not a risk; it is a schedule, with unknown dates. The only question is whether each turnover finds a prepared successor or triggers a scramble, and that question is being answered right now, by whether the names on your grid are being developed or merely listed.
Developed benches change more than continuity math. They change how boldly you can operate, knowing every key seat has a real heir. They change who stays, because your best people are being built, visibly. And they change the worst week you will eventually have, the sudden departure, into a hard week instead of a crisis year. Bring us the grid. We will tell you the truth about it, and then we will make it true.
