3 tips for Graduating Students Searching for a Job

You’re in the final semester of college and you’re thinking of your next steps post-graduation. Before you graduate, take the time to utilize all your options before you leave campus.

1. Apply for Internships or Entry Level Positions

Typically during your stint at school, many degrees require their students to spend a portion of their semester working with an organization outside of campus to gain experience. During the duration of your internship, remember that this is also an opportunity for the organization to “trial” potential future employees. In other words, based on your performance this could become an opportunity for you after you graduate. See our tips on why it is important to take your internships seriously.

If you decide to forgo opportunities with your previous internship, apply for entry level positions with companies at a “growth stage”. These companies are typically newer, fast-growing companies looking to bring on applicants who are looking to grow with them.

As a reminder, if you lack experience in the work field, use your education as well as your previous internships to let potential employers know of your most valuable experiences during your time at school.

2. Network as Much as You Can

During your last semester, utilize social media channels such as LinkedIn or Meetup to maximize your chances at landing a job. Many colleges and universities also offer job fairs where you are able to attend and meet with potential employers.

During these events, bring copies of your resume and network with as many companies as possible. Make sure that you are dressed appropriately when you attend these events to maximize your chances at landing an interview. If you need help with tips on proper attire, check out our article here.

3. Resume and Interview Preparation on Campus

Utilize your school’s services by checking campus boards and websites for workshops offered. Many of these seminars will only help strengthen your skills and prepare you to meet with future employers. If your school does not offer these workshops, check to see if there are any workshops offered in your area or contact a career services firm like Employment BOOST to further develop your skills.
