Do Work Relationships Benefit Your Career?

In a recent TED research campaign, the importance behind employee relationships was highlighted and looked into. Though it is common practice to categorize friends into formal (work) and informal (friends) relationships, studies have shown the benefits behind creating such relationships within the workplace.

In today’s workplace, companies are starting to place a heavy emphasis on team building activities and vice versa to strengthen group communications. Here are three more points that prove why you should start to get to know your coworkers better.

Increase in Trust

One of the largest unsaid benefits of having a “close community” is the trust each team member cultivates. Trust, being one of the core assets for any given relationship instills motivation and encouragement for coworkers in a formal setting. In places where it’s needed, employees are more open to share constructive criticism among each other to professionally develop.

In environments where teamwork is frequently required, teammates are often confident in the other person’s skills with reassurance that coworker is looking out for one another.

Boosts Productivity

Each employee in the work place will have strengths and weaknesses. More often than not, when a team of employees work in unison, they collaborate instead of dictate. In addition to this, the teams are more likely to collaboratively share ideas and work with suggestions amongst all members of the team.

Though it may take some time to find a rhythm among any number of employees, a good relationship creates an environment that allows frequent tasks to be completed efficiently and flawlessly.

Higher Morale Rate

In environments where morale is deemed as low, employees tend to find it hard to stay motivated or produce satisfactory results. Employees in a tight knit community constantly congratulate each member during moments of success and build on each other when improvement is needed. Environments such as these allow coworkers to look forward to working with each other while building each employee’s esteem throughout the work day.

In the end, you will most likely spend up to 40 hours a week working with the same employees for the time you are at your place of employment. Take some time to get to know your fellow coworkers by attending any work related events or take some personal time to grab lunch together during the work week. In the end, it could benefit the productivity at your job!
