You’ve done a great job surpassing the automated (ATS) systems and have impressed a hiring manager with your resume. Part of landing any job requires an in-person interview where you want to ensure you are making a good first impression. Before you head out the door to meet your interviewer, make sure you are avoiding these mistakes!
Better Safe Than Sorry:
Before you pick out your outfit, do some research to find information on the company culture. Look into the company’s social media platforms or reach out to your contact in regards of an appropriate dress code. If you do not prefer to do so, ensuring your outfit is business professional is the safest option to allow you to make a proper first impression.
Avoid Being Too Casual:
In cases where the company dress code calls for business casual or casual attire, avoid wearing clothing that is too tight or too short (even during the summer heat). Tanks, plunging necklines, and casual shorts are out of the question!
Make sure your outfit is clean and wrinkle free before running out the door, and that your shoes are clean. Wearing sneakers or old beat up shoes will give the impression that you are unpolished and unprofessional.
Don’t Overdo It:
There’s nothing wrong with adding your own personal flair to your outfit. If you choose to accessorize, your jewelry should be simple statement pieces. Make sure the items you wear are appropriate will not be distracting to you or others during your interview. During your interview, also make sure that your colognes or perfumes are light. You don’t want to overwhelm your interviewer with strong scents or make up applications, only to take away from your interview presence. You want the interviewer to remember how you answered your questions, not how you looked or smelled.
