More likely than not companies will schedule a quick screening before they invite you in for a formal interview. Though you may seem qualified on paper, each 15-30 minute phone screen will allow the hiring manager or recruiter to evaluate your communication skills and gives you the opportunity to stand out from other candidates. To prepare for your next phone interview, check out some of these dos and don’ts.
Don’t- Be Distracted During Your Call
Find a quiet, comfortable space for your interview. Avoid noisy environments where you lack control such as coffee shops or a public campus. You want your chosen location to be distraction-free to ensure you are on track with your thoughts.
Don’t- Ask About Next Steps Immediately After the Interview
Wait a day or two before inquiring about next steps. Make sure to send a short thank you to express your interest in working with the company and your desire to move forward with the interview process.
Don’t- Ask About Salary or Benefits
By doing so, it can lead the recruiter to the wrong impression that you are more motivated by money than the role you are interviewing for. Save the discussion of salary or benefits for when the hiring manager is ready to give you an offer.
Do- Plan Ahead
Feel free to research the company, utilizing company websites and social media forums to compile a cheat sheet. Use platforms such as LinkedIn to see if you share any commonalities with your recruiter.
Do- Prepare Your Own Questions
Show your level of interest by asking the recruiter a few of your own questions. If the recruiter is unable to offer the correct answers to your questions, save them for the hiring manager in the next interview.
Ask questions such as:
- What are some of the challenges of the role? For the company?
- What are expectations for someone in this role within the first 30 days?
- Can you tell me a little bit about what a typical day would be like for this job?
- What skills will help me succeed best in this role?
- What kind of feedback does the company offer for improvements?
