No matter what line of work, level, or industry you are in, you will need to show the hiring manager that you are capable of simple tasks such as checking for minor mistakes that could be on your resume. Before submitting your resume to a potential employer, make sure it is free of these 5 grammar mistakes.
Randomly Capitalizing Words
Look through your resume and check for any words that stand out to you. Though capitals can draw in the reader’s eye, it can become quite distracting when it is overdone unnecessarily. Aside from proper capitalization rules, only capitalize proper nouns such as names or places.
Using Too Much Industry Jargon
Though it is important to let your reader know that you are familiar with the industry and understand the terminology, avoid from saturating your resume in using too much hyper-specific terminology. If you choose to use compressed terms in your resume, make sure to spell out the word the first time it is used before continuing to abbreviate it in the rest of your document.
Making Homophone Mistakes
Similar to spelling mistakes, using incorrect homonyms can be damaging to your chances of getting a callback. Though this depends solely on the person reviewing your resume, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Watch for words such as they’re, there, and their or too, two, or to.
Using Weak Verbs
Find feeble, non-descriptive verbs in your resume and switch them out for more specific words instead. Switch out weak action words such as was, had, or did with compelling words such as organized, oversaw, instituted, or launched. Focus on strengthening the description of your responsibilities or accomplishments in your previous or present line of work.
Not Proofreading Your Final Product
Mistakes happen. Keep your eyes peeled for spelling, language, or grammar problems throughout your resume. After looking over your resume, ask other people to look over your document to decrease the number of possible errors.
